Every Etsy fee explained (dated, sourced)

Three fees apply to essentially every Etsy sale. The listing fee is $0.20, charged when you publish a listing and again each time it renews — every four months, or automatically when an item sells. The transaction fee is 6.5%, and it is calculated on the full amount the buyer pays, including shipping and gift wrapping, not just the item price. That detail catches people out: charging the buyer for postage increases the fee. Payment processing for US sellers is 3% + $0.25 per order. Rates differ by country, so confirm yours against Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy.
Worked example: $30 item with shipping

Take a $30 item with $5 shipping charged to the buyer, sold by a US seller.
- Listing fee: $0.20
- Transaction fee: 6.5% of $35 = $2.28
- Payment processing: 3% of $35 + $0.25 = $1.30
Total Etsy fees: $3.78 on $35 collected, leaving $31.22 before your own costs. Note the transaction fee is $2.28 rather than $1.95, because the $5 of shipping is included in the 6.5% base. Subtract what the item cost you to make or buy, plus your actual postage and packaging, and what remains is real profit.
How much does Etsy take per sale?

On a standard order with no advertising, Etsy takes roughly 10.5% plus $0.45. On a $100 sale that is $6.50 transaction, $3.25 processing and $0.20 listing — $9.95, leaving $90.05. The percentage feels higher on small orders because the $0.20 and $0.25 are flat: on a $10 sale those fixed amounts alone are 4.5% of the order. It climbs further if the sale came through Offsite Ads, which adds 12% or 15% on top. Sellers quoting “about 10%” are describing the standard case only.
Offsite Ads: when you pay them

Offsite Ads are the fee most likely to surprise you, because you do not choose it per sale. Etsy advertises listings on external platforms and charges only when a shopper clicks one of those ads and then buys from you.
- Shops with under $10,000 in sales over the trailing 12 months pay 15% of the order.
- Shops at or above $10,000 pay a reduced 12%.
- The fee is capped at $100 per order.
The catch: once a shop crosses $10,000 in a 365-day period, participation becomes mandatory and cannot be switched off. Tick the Offsite Ads box in the calculator to see what that does to a given order.
Pricing to protect your margin

Because the transaction fee includes shipping, “free shipping” is never free — you pay 6.5% on the postage you absorb into the item price either way, so price it in deliberately rather than hoping it washes out. Watch the break-even figure above: it tells you the lowest item price that still covers fees and costs. Two habits protect margin more than anything else. Re-check your actual postage and packaging cost, which drifts upward quietly, and price with the worst case in mind — an Offsite Ads order at 15% — rather than the standard case, so an ad-driven sale is a smaller win rather than a loss.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Etsy take from a $100 sale?
Etsy takes $9.95 from a $100 sale in standard fees, leaving $90.05. That is $6.50 transaction fee (6.5%), $3.25 payment processing (3% + $0.25) and the $0.20 listing fee. If the buyer also paid shipping, the 6.5% applies to that too, so the total rises. An Offsite Ads order would add a further $12 or $15.
Does Etsy charge a $29 fee?
No. Etsy has no standard $29 fee. The figure usually comes from Etsy Plus, an optional subscription that costs $10 a month, or from a run of fees landing on one statement and being read as a single charge. Open your Payment account and expand the individual entries — listing, transaction, processing and any ads spend are itemised separately there.
Why is Etsy charging me $10 a month?
That is almost certainly Etsy Plus, an optional subscription billed at $10 per month. It adds listing credits, restock requests and shop customisation options. It is not required to sell, and you can cancel it in your shop settings. If you are not deliberately using its features, the subscription is pure cost on top of the per-sale fees.
What are all of Etsy's fees?
For a typical US seller: a $0.20 listing fee per listing and renewal, a 6.5% transaction fee on item price plus shipping, and 3% + $0.25 payment processing. On top of those, optional or conditional charges include Offsite Ads at 12% or 15%, Etsy Ads (your own daily budget), Etsy Plus at $10 a month, and currency conversion if you are paid in a different currency. Always confirm current rates on Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy.
Is it worth it to sell through Etsy?
It depends on your margin, not on the fee percentage alone. Roughly 10.5% plus fixed cents is competitive against most marketplaces, and you are buying access to an audience already searching for handmade and vintage. It works when your item carries enough markup to absorb that and still pay you for materials and time. It does not work on thin-margin, low-priced items, where the flat $0.45 per order dominates.
What are the downsides of selling on Etsy?
Fees that rise without notice, Offsite Ads becoming mandatory above $10,000 in trailing sales, and competing against a large number of similar shops on price. Etsy also owns the customer relationship — repeat buyers belong to the marketplace more than to you. Search visibility can shift with algorithm changes you have no control over, which makes revenue harder to forecast than on a site you own.
What is the $29 fee on Etsy?
There is no $29 fee in Etsy’s standard fee structure. The most common explanation is Etsy Plus at $10 a month being confused with another charge, or several separate fees on one statement adding up near that figure. Check the itemised entries in your Payment account — each listing, transaction and processing fee is listed individually rather than bundled.
Is selling in Etsy worth it?
It is worth it when your pricing has room for it. Run a real item through the calculator above with your actual material cost and postage, and look at the profit margin rather than the headline fee. If the margin holds at a price buyers will pay, Etsy’s audience is worth the roughly 10.5%. If the margin only works by assuming no Offsite Ads order ever lands, the pricing is too tight.
