Etsy Fees Explained
Etsy charges three fees on a standard sale: $0.20 per listing, 6.5% of the total the buyer pays including shipping, and 3% + $0.25 payment processing for US sellers. Together that is about 10.5% plus $0.45 per order — roughly $9.95 on a $100 sale.

Fee table (source + checked date)
These are the fees that apply to a standard US sale. Rates vary by country and change over time, so treat this as a starting point and confirm against Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy.
| Fee | Rate | Charged on |
|---|---|---|
| Listing | $0.20 | Each listing, and each renewal (every 4 months or on sale) |
| Transaction | 6.5% | Item price + shipping + gift wrap the buyer pays |
| Payment processing (US) | 3% + $0.25 | Total order value |
| Offsite Ads | 12% or 15% | Orders that came from an Etsy-placed external ad |
| Etsy Plus | $10/month | Optional subscription |
The transaction fee base is the part most often misread. It is the full amount collected from the buyer, not the item price alone, so shipping you charge is taxed at 6.5% as well.
Examples at $10, $30, $100
The same percentage lands very differently depending on order size, because $0.45 of every order is flat.
| Sale | Listing | Transaction 6.5% | Processing 3% + $0.25 | Total fees | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $10 | $0.20 | $0.65 | $0.55 | $1.40 | 14.0% |
| $30 | $0.20 | $1.95 | $1.15 | $3.30 | 11.0% |
| $100 | $0.20 | $6.50 | $3.25 | $9.95 | 10.0% |
A $10 item loses 14% to fees while a $100 item loses 10%. That is the whole argument against very cheap listings: the flat components do not shrink. If you sell low-priced items, bundling them into larger orders moves the effective rate down materially.
Fees you can avoid

Some Etsy costs are genuinely optional, and it is worth knowing which.
- Etsy Plus ($10/month) — optional. Cancel it in shop settings if you are not using the credits and customisation.
- Etsy Ads — you set the daily budget, and can set it to zero.
- Offsite Ads — avoidable only while your shop is under $10,000 in trailing 12-month sales. Above that it becomes mandatory.
- Currency conversion — avoidable by listing and being paid in the same currency where possible.
Listing, transaction and payment processing fees are not avoidable. The lever there is pricing, not opting out: raise the price or the order size so the fixed $0.45 is a smaller share. Relisting unsold items also quietly costs $0.20 each time, so pruning listings that never sell saves real money over a year.
Calculator

The calculator on the fee calculator page applies these rates to your own numbers. Enter the item price, the shipping you charge the buyer, what the item cost you to make or buy, and your real postage and packaging cost. It returns the fee breakdown, your profit, your margin, and the break-even price — the lowest you could charge and still cover everything. Tick the Offsite Ads box to see the same order at 15%, which is the case worth pricing against. The fee rates are editable, so if Etsy changes them, or your country’s processing rate differs, you can adjust the inputs rather than relying on the defaults.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Etsy take from a $100 sale?
Etsy takes $9.95 from a $100 sale: $6.50 transaction (6.5%), $3.25 processing (3% + $0.25), and $0.20 listing. You keep $90.05 before your own costs. If the buyer paid shipping on top, the 6.5% applies to that as well, and an Offsite Ads order adds a further 12% or 15%.
What are the disadvantages of selling on Etsy?
Thin margins on low-priced items, since $0.45 per order is flat. Offsite Ads becoming mandatory once you pass $10,000 in trailing sales. Heavy competition in popular categories, which pushes prices down. And limited ownership of the customer relationship — buyers tend to remember Etsy, not your shop, which makes repeat business harder to build than on your own site.
Which is cheaper, Etsy or eBay?
It depends on price. Etsy is about 10.5% + $0.45 per order; eBay is around 13.6% + $0.40 for most categories. Etsy is usually cheaper on a like-for-like sale. But eBay’s rate varies widely by category (roughly 2.5% to 15.3%), so in some categories eBay is cheaper. Check your specific category on eBay’s selling fees page.
Why is Etsy charging me $10 a month?
That is Etsy Plus, an optional $10-per-month subscription — not a required selling fee. It provides listing credits, restock requests and extra shop customisation. If you are not actively using those, cancel it in your shop settings; the per-sale fees are unaffected either way.
Is Etsy worth the fees?
It is worth it when the margin survives the fees. About 10.5% plus fixed cents is reasonable for access to an audience already searching for handmade and vintage goods. The test is simple: price a real item with your true material and postage costs, subtract the fees, and see whether what is left pays you properly for your time. If it only works when no Offsite Ads order lands, it is too tight.
Why are so many people leaving Etsy?
Mostly rising costs and reduced control. Fee increases, mandatory Offsite Ads above $10,000 in trailing sales, more competition in saturated categories, and search visibility that can change without warning. Sellers who leave usually move to their own storefront to own pricing and the customer list — accepting that they must then generate their own traffic, which is the trade Etsy was covering.
Is Etsy still worth it in 2026?
Yes, for the right products. Etsy still delivers buyers with purchase intent in handmade, vintage and craft supply categories, which is expensive to replicate independently. It stops being worth it when your items are low-priced enough that the flat $0.45 dominates, or generic enough that you compete purely on price. Run your actual numbers rather than deciding on the headline percentage.
